A Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) officer has been arrested for stealing a woman's phone.
The officer stationed in Turkana snatched a mobile phone worth Ksh25,000 from the woman in Mombasa, raising questions about the detective's ethical conduct.
The woman narrated to the police that her phone was snatched by a Tuktuk driver as she was receiving a call while buying groceries from a street vendor.
Mombasa detectives later established that the driver of the three-wheeler was a colleague attached to Turkana.
It was not immediately clear what the officer was doing in Mombasa.
According to police reports, the incident happened at 9 a.m.
"The suspect was arrested and officers took the tuk-tuk to Central Police Station. Upon interrogation, the suspect was found with a police badge bearing the name Said Omar Mazima, who then identified himself as a police officer attached to the DCI Kibish in Turkana County," the police report stated.
Kenyans have in the past blamed a surge in crime rates on laxity in the police force and officers with criminal tendencies.
Mazima threatened to kill the fruit vendor who had tried to pursue him after he snatched the phone from the woman.
"As he tried to drive off towards Treasury Square, the fruit vendor hung on to the tuk-tuk, demanding that the driver return the phone," reads a police report.
"But the suspect threatened to stab the fruit vendor, forcing him to jump off the tuk-tuk. The driver then started driving back and forth, trying to run over the vendor."
Kenyans.co.ke could not establish whether the officer was in Mombasa for a holiday or lives in the coastal city.
