An early morning accident on Saturday at Londiani Area at Kericho Highway resulted in 5 fatalities, as confirmed by Red Cross Kenya.

Reports indicate that the accident was caused by a 14-seater matatu ramming into a trailer

Police officers drawn from Kericho quickly rushed to the area where they cleared the accident scene.

At the time, police officers found out that most of the passengers were still stuck in the matatu, injured and in urgent need of medical help.

Nakuru County Government, under Governor Susan Kihika, promptly dispatched a fire brigade team which rescued the trapped individuals.

After administering first aid, six casualties were evacuated to Molo Sub County Hospital, while four others were rushed to Londiani Sub County Hospital.

“Unfortunately five people, four men and one child,  lost their lives,” Red Cross confirmed.

The accident comes barely months after 55 people lost their lives in the same areas in an accident where a trailer rammed into Public Service Vehicles (PSVs).

Immediately after the tragedy, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced sweeping changes in the sector.

The CS started a nationwide road safety campaign in Kericho, Nakuru, Kiambu, Machakos, and Nyeri counties in response to the Londiani accident.

His campaign included marking roads and placement of signage on major roads and highways and moving traders away from the Londiani stretch.

Despite the measures instituted by the National Government, motorists have continued treating Londiani as a black spot.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 3,760 individuals have lost their lives in road accidents in Kenya from January to October 15.
