Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has cautioned motorists of a traffic snarl-up after a truck stalled along the Rironi-Mai Mahiu Road.

In a statement, KeNHA noted that the truck developed mechanical issues mid-journey blocking traffic flow.

The Authority added that contractors were deployed to the site, alongside traffic police officers to man traffic and clear the gridlock.

"Motorists are advised of a traffic snarl-up along the Escarpment Route (Rironi - Mai Mahiu), approximately 10 kilometres from Rironi towards Mai Mahiu, after a truck experienced mechanical issues," read part of the statement.

"KeNHA through her Performance Based Contractor is working closely with the traffic police to manage and control the traffic flow. The Authority urges motorists to exercise caution and patience while driving through this section."

KeNHA further thanked travellers for cooperating and exercising patience, urging them to give the authority more time to fix the issue.

"We appreciate your cooperation as the Authority works towards resolving this issue promptly. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops." the statement further reads.

Motorists were stuck on the stretch on Thursday evening for more than eight hours, appealing to relevant authorities to help clear it up.

Travellers at the time had also faulted drivers overlapping the traffic, noting that it was worsening the already messy gridlock.

Motorists were advised to use different routes to avoid the delays.

"Avoid Mai Mahiu road from Nairobi. The traffic is very bad starting from Kwa Governor to the Hilly Place. Use alternative roads," John Njoro stated.

"Avoid Mai Mahiu if travelling. I have been here since 9 pm yesterday and we are still stuck," another motorist advised.

Similar situations have in the past caused congestion along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, with citizens requesting the government to expand the narrow road for easier navigation for vehicles using the route.
