Operation Linda Ugatuzi on Thursday sued the Kenya Kwanza government for allegedly taking advantage of the boda boda rider and mama mboga brand during the campaign period.

Led by Professor Fred Ogola, the lobby group has demanded compensation of up to Ksh465 billion from the government.

However, Ogola argued that the figure was minimal compared to the boda boda sector's contribution to the economy and also considering that President William's administration has failed to fulfil its campaign promises to the riders.

"Boda boda and mama mboga contribute about 80 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Boda boda alone contributes Ksh1 billion every year to the economy," he stated.

According to Ogola, the current regime has benefited largely by using the boda rider and mama mboga brand to win the 2027 General Election and gain popularity among the hustlers.

None of the policies issued by Ruto have addressed the problems faced by the hustlers, he added, insisting that those that offer hope have yet to be implemented.

He urged the court to issue a temporary injunction on the names, barring politicians from using them until the case is heard and determined.

The professor also demanded that the court should compel all leaders using the boda boda riders and mama mbogas in their speeches to produce consent from the involved parties.

During the campaign leading to the 2022 General Election, President Ruto promised to uplift boda riders and mama mbogas.

After taking over office, Ruto implemented the Hustler Fund to offer affordable loans to riders and vendors. However, complaints were raised that the amount offered was unsubstantial.

Another program by the President unveiled to help the hustlers was the introduction of e-bikes to create more jobs for the youth. However, the project was also met with criticism with complaints about the price and durability of the motorcycles.

Additionally, Ruto's approach to heavily tax Kenyans does not augur well with hustlers.
