Nuclear experts drawn from the United States, India and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday, January 9, reported that they were satisfied with Kenya's preparedness to develop a new Research Reactor Programme

The Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review for Research Reactors (INIR-RR) was made following a nine-day review mission in Kenya.

The team of experts had jetted into the country to assess the preparations made by President William Ruto’s administration towards establishing a research reactor programme to solve the energy crisis in the country.

Ruto’s government received the nod following the successful review that was undertaken between December 11 and 19, 2023.

In its report, the IAEA explained that the assessment was conducted at the invitation of President Ruto’s government.

“Kenya has demonstrated a sustained and very professional approach to the development of its research reactor programme,” the review read in part.

“We noted that before making the final decision, Kenya did a great job of developing and preparing laws and regulatory documents.”

The INIR-RR further commended Ruto’s government for involving all stakeholders while developing the human resources of both the future operator and the regulator.

Kenya aims to have its first nuclear reactor project in the Uyombo area, Kilifi County.

The project which is set to be operational in 2027 will be constructed at a cost of Ksh560 billion.

The government justifying the decision to launch the ambitious project noted it was a long-term plan to bring down fuel costs.

This has been necessitated by the consistent and continuous receding of water levels in hydroelectric dams.
