President William Ruto’s administration on Wednesday, January 17, disbursed Ksh1.2 billion to the Ministry of Education.

This was days after the administration made another disbursement to the Ministry amounting to Ksh31 billion.

The Ksh1.2 billion was meant as a capitation for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions while the initial disbursement went to the State Department of Basic Education.

“The Government has released Ksh1.192 billion to TVET institutions nationwide, marking a pivotal moment in its commitment to skills development,” a statement from the Ministry of Education read in part.

According to the Ezekiel Machogu-led ministry, the disbursement signified a major boost for TVET institutions as it would provide tuition support.

The funds will also used for the purchase of training materials, utilities and facilitation of co-curricular activities.

“This injection of resources aims to foster an environment conducive to effective learning and skill acquisition,” the statement read further.

As part of President William Ruto’s administration's focus on enhancing accessibility and elevating the quality and relevance of TVET, part of the cash will be used to provide financial assistance to individual trainees.

This is aimed at empowering aspiring and young professionals in various fields.

“This funding ensures that current TVET trainees have ample opportunities for success within and beyond the institution, emphasising the inclusive principle of training for everyone and leaving no one behind,” the Ministry added.

The Ksh31 billion on the other hand was meant to facilitate learning in primary, junior secondary and secondary schools across the country.

Leaders from the opposition led by Azimio Leader Raila Odinga had earlier criticised Ruto's government for not disbursing the cash in a timely manner.

"The government must release all the monies owed to schools. It must also release capitation at the approved rate of Ksh22,244 per child for the financial year 2023/2024,"  Raila stated on January 2.
