The Kenya Sex Workers Alliance (KESWA) on Thursday disclosed plans to stage nationwide demonstrations in protest against the recent surge in femicide cases.
KESWA National Coordinator Phelister Abdalla who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke confirmed the planned demos, noting that it was aimed at creating awareness against the surge in femicide cases.
"A lot of women are going to be involved because it is an all-women issue not only one category of women," the KESWA Coordinator noted.
"As sex workers, we are calling on their women to march because we also face femicide in our work."
The KESWA Coordinator further revealed, that in Nairobi, the protests will be held at the Jevanjee Gardens from January 27.
She noted the demos were also aimed at compelling the government to offer sex workers security.
The call for protest by KESWA comes days following the recent murder of 20-year-old Rita Waeni whose body was retrieved from a short-stay accomodation in Roysambu, Nairobi County on January 15.
Waeni who was a student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) was allegedly lured to her death by a foreign national.
In a similar incident on January 6, Instagram model Starlet Wahu's lifeless body was discovered at an apartment in Nairobi's South B Estate.
Even so, suspects linked to the murder of the two women have since been arrested or arraigned even as investigations continue in a bid to unravel more details into the gruesome incidents.
Several women organisations including The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) and The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) also raised alarm over the increase in femicide cases.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also condemned the murders and called for heightened security across the country.
