Police in Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) are investigating a car hijacking incident that happened on Saturday morning, January 20.
Detectives launched a manhunt for the gang after they discovered 500 boxes of Government textbooks worth millions abandoned along the isolated Kaptagat Kaptarakwa Marum Road inside Kaptagat Forest.
"The motor vehicle carrying the books might have been hijacked and hijackers offloaded the books," the DCI officials stated.
"The goods were abandoned in far away from the prying public," the statement added.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the books were meant for Junior Secondary Schools belonging to Nyamira North and Nyamira South sub-counties.
However, since the vehicle was not found at the scene of the crime, the officers established that the gang may have sped off with it.
Authorities further raised concerns about the safety and security of educational resources in the region as they pursued the motive behind the incident.
Grade 6 students reported to Junior Secondary Schools on Monday, January 15, nearly four days before their results were announced yesterday.
The Kenya National Education Council (KNEC) released the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) results and advised parents to pick them from their headteachers.
In December last year, Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, set aside Ksh3.9 billion for the construction of classrooms at Junior Secondary School (JSS).
He added that the World Bank would provide an additional Ksh9 billion towards the setup of 9,000 classrooms.
Meanwhile, carjacking cases have been on the rise since the Christmas festivities. Police recorded several incidents countrywide including one where a motorist was robbed at gunpoint along Thika Road.
Motorists, especially taxi drivers were urged to be cautious when ferrying passengers at night.
