Catherine Wambugu an apple farmer from Laikipia County on Wednesday raised alarm over roaming lions along the Nyeri-Nyahururu Highway.
Through a social media post, the popular apple farmer cautioned motorists plying the route to be careful, especially at night.
In her post, Wambugu revealed that while driving home on Wednesday night at around 10.40 pm, she came across 25 lions playing and sleeping next to the road.
The animals were going about their normal routine near the Salio Ranch oblivious of the threat they posed to motorists and pedestrians along the busy road.
When she encountered the pack of lions, Wambugu, frightened of a potential attack, started to drive back towards the direction she came from. On her way back, she met a boda boda driver heading towards the direction she had left. She quickly warned him of the danger lying ahead.
"We had to stop and quickly told the man on the bike to go back and we couldn't proceed with our journey before he turned because of the danger ahead," she stated.
Following the incident, the victims reported the matter to the nearest police station to ensure that the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) was notified of the situation.
Wambugu who brands herself as the apple ambassador advised motorists to ensure their windows were closed or use a different route.
She was praised for saving the life of the boda rider who was unaware of the danger.
Meanwhile, Kenyans called upon the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to act promptly and herd the lions back to the park.
Residents from the area commenting online noted that it is not uncommon to spot stray lions along the stretch. Most of them claimed that their efforts to get the KWS to address the matter had proved futile.
"They must have strayed to the road from Solio Ranch. They better be herded back before they attack. It was nice and considerate to warn the rider. God bless you," one person commented.
In March 2023, a lion was seen causally crossing the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. An official from KWS remarked that there was no cause for alarm since the lions were in their natural habitat and were used to cross from one end of the Tsavo National Park to the other.
