The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) has warned media houses against infringing its rights to air the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

In a statement issued by the KBC Acting Managing Director Paul Macharia, the national broadcaster insisted that it was the only media house in the country with the rights to air the matches.

Macharia noted that the rights included privileges to record AFCON content.

Therefore, media houses were cautioned against using or broadcasting AFCON content without proper authorisation.

The MD noted that the media house will be pursuing legal action should they find any media house or outlet contravening its rights.

“Kindly note that any infringement or violation of Kenya Broadcasting Corporation’s license shall be detrimental to KBC and its global partners at large."

"Any such infringement or violation shall be addressed to you via prompt written notice to cease and desist, and where necessary through adequate legal action by KBC and all concerned parties," the MD's statement read in part.

KBC is the only Kenyan media house that has exclusive rights to broadcast the matches across its channels.

However, other international media houses such as SuperSport are also airing the matches on the platforms.

The continental tournament began on January 13 with 24 countries participating in the tournament being held in Ivory Coast.

Afcon is currently at the round of 16 stage with Angola, Namibia, Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea, Egypt, DR Congo, Cape Verde, Mauritania, Senegal, and Ivory Coast battling for the trophy.

Also in the round of 16 are Mali, Burkina Faso, Morocco and South Africa. Kenya alongside Uganda and Tanzania will be hosting the 2027 edition.
