A motorist was left stranded on Saturday after his vehicle was stolen from the parking lot of a mall in Kitengela, Kajiado County.
The incident captured on CCTV at around 4.35 pm showed the suspect quietly approaching the vehicle, after which he accessed the vehicle using what is believed to be a master key before driving away.
As depicted in the CCTV footage, the thief was seen casually entering the Nissan Note without attracting the attention of other motorists in the parking lot.
Within a few minutes, he was in the vehicle and out of the parking lot. It was however unclear how he managed to open the car without turning on the alarm
Following the incident, the owner reported the matter at the Kitengela Police Station as investigations commenced.
The driver has appealed online to help recover his vehicle.
A section of Kenyans were irked by the incident calling upon mall management to implement a card system where each motorist gets when entering the premises and returns it when exiting.
Others advised drivers to lock the steering which will hinder thieves from driving away with the car.
Additionally, some opined that this was done by a close friend who knew where the car was parked and how to disconnect the alarm system.
Kenyans also listed the previous owner of the vehicle as a suspect. They opined that the owner may have tracked the vehicle and stolen it when the man entered the mall.
Also, car wash attendants were identified as potential suspects with a section of Kenyans observing that they might have made a copy of the vehicle and tracked the owner to the mall.
Kenyans called upon police officers and other law enforcement personnel to rein on the car theft syndicates.
In the past few months, numerous cases of cars being stolen have been reported with some motorists losing their vehicles to armed gangs.
The Motorist Association Kenya Chairman Peter Murima explained that the spike in car theft could be attributed to the high cost of living pushing Kenyans to illegal activities.
