Police officers, on Monday, recovered an AK-47 rifle in Kisumu stolen from a Ugandan police officer who was attacked and hacked by a gang.
Speaking to the press, acting Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson, Moses Mugwe revealed that an operation to trace the gun was launched immediately after it went missing.
Mugwe stated that he received a call from his Kenyan counterparts who informed him about the recovery.
The Kenyan police seized the gun after the gang fled and dumped it alongside their gateway car while being pursued.
Later on, they contacted Mugwe and other colleagues from Uganda to inspect the abandoned car. Police recovered four phones and a man-made gun
"Upon preliminary examination, it was identified as the gun that belonged to the Tororo police officer," Mugwe remarked after positively identifying the rifle.
Police linked the recovered gun to multiple robberies in the country and across the border and launched a manhunt for the suspects. Meanwhile, District Police Commander in Tororo Adam Kimuli noted that some accomplices had already been arrested in Uganda and charged before the Tororo District Court.
The rifle was ferried to police headquarters in Nairobi for further forensic analysis.
Reports alleged that the gun was stolen in July 2023, when the thugs attacked the officer and hacked him with a crude weapon.
They then escaped with his gun and other valuables after he became unconscious and passed out.
Last week, another officer lost his AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition at the Uganda-Kenya border after he was attacked by a civilian.
The officer was said to have been ambushed while patrolling the Kenya-Uganda railway line in Malaba town.
