Nzoia residents in Bungoma county torched a car believed to belong to the National Police Service (NPS) on Tuesday while protesting against a police officer accused of extra-judicial killing.
Eyewitnesses stated that the incident, which occurred near Nzoia Sugar Company, alarmed security apparatus within the region.
According to the residents, the residents retaliated against a police officer accused of shooting dead a Nzoia Sugar security guard who was heading home from night duty.
On the fateful day, the residents were attracted by the gunshots and upon rushing to the scene, found the guard on the ground bleeding. The officer who was said to have been patrolling the area was also seen within the vicinity.
Upon seeing the man lying on the ground bleeding profusely, the residents mobilised themselves to confront him.
Tension escalated as the officer was cornered by the angry mob prompting his colleagues who were nearby to respond to his distress.
While scampering for safety, the officers left behind their car which was targeted by the frustrated and enraged residents.
The mob burnt the car to ashes as other residents watched from a distance, cautious of attracting the wrath of police officers.
Police have yet to issue a response on the case. An official at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) also told Kenyans.co.ke that they were not appraised of the incident but would get in touch with a team in Bungoma before releasing a preliminary report.
Consequently, on February 20, police were accused of shooting two men during a protest in Busia.
This was after a group of unemployed youths identified as Marachi jobless youth took to the streets to protest against the high rate of unemployment in the county.
For three consecutive days, the youths countered police deployed to man them forcing the county commissioner, Mwachaunga Chaunga, to step in. Chaunga warned the youth that they risked being charged with public disorder and destruction of public property.
