Former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi has passed away, as announced by President Samia Suluhu on Thursday, February 29, evening.
The announcement of the former head of state's death was broadcast on live national television, delivered in a solemn tone.
Mwinyi is remembered in Kenya for his significant role in nurturing diplomatic relations between Kenya and Tanzania during his presidency from 1985 to 1995.
"I am saddened to announce the tragic death of former President Ali Hassan Mwinyi," expressed Samia Suluhu.
He collaborated closely with Kenyan leaders to enhance cooperation between the two neighbouring countries, particularly in trade, security, and infrastructure development.
Additionally, he played a crucial role in mediating regional conflicts and advancing peace and stability in East Africa.
"On behalf of the government of the United Republic of Tanzania, I extend my condolences to the family, relatives, friends, and all Tanzanians for this great loss to the nation," stated President Hassan.
Furthermore, she revealed that Mwinyi had been undergoing treatment in London, UK, since November 2023 before being transferred back to Tanzania and admitted to Mzena Hospital, where he passed away.
Mwinyi, who succeeded Julius Nyerere, was hospitalized on February 2 due to a chest illness, during which his family requested privacy.
"Flags will be flown at half-mast as the country enters a period of mourning," added the president.
Tanzania tragically lost its head of state, John Magufuli, in 2021. The late president was succeeded by the current sitting President Samia Suluhu, who now faces the responsibility of bidding farewell to another predecessor.
This comes in a period when Kenya has enjoyed renewed diplomatic relations after former President Uhuru Kenyatta visited Samia Suluhu to discuss the state of affairs between the two states.
