5 Suspects Escape, 1 Killed in Police Shootout in Kiambu

Police in Kikuyu have confirmed the killing of one suspect and the escape of five others following a botched robbery in Regen estate, Kikuyu within Kiambu County.

OCPD Kikuyu, Ronald Kirui, stated on Tuesday, March 12, that police intervened when the gang of six was in the process of ransacking a family home.

According to Kirui, police arrived at the scene while the gang was coercing the residents into transferring money from their bank accounts

“At that moment they had already taken their phones and had started transferring money from the bank to mobile money, which was not successful,” explained Kirui

Additionally, the robbers had taken into their possession, a laptop, a jacket and phones from the tenants of the building.

Further, the police detail that a shooting episode ensued where security agencies fired at the robbers gunning down one of them.

Kirui also noted that the thieves were in possession of an improvised firearm, which they used to engage the officers in the shootout.

The improvised firearm has since been recovered and is within police custody.

Kikuyu police boss, Kirui also reported that the rest of the gang sustained bullet wounds following the Monday night shootout.

He appealed to hospitals who may receive patients with gunshot wounds to report them to the police.

The police officers on patrol were acting on a tip-off from the public who had heard the scuffle and responded swiftly.

In a separate incident that happened on February 19, in Ruiru Kimbo, four armed robbers were ambushed by police and arrested after they attempted to rob a newly established nightclub.

Their attempt was unsuccessful as it is reported that the club is located a few metres away from a General Service Unit (GSU) camp
