The Kenya Meteorological Department has attributed the current dry weather conditions to the decrease in moisture influx into the country.

In a statement dated Wednesday, March 13, the department further elaborated that this reduction in moisture had been caused by delays in the movement of rain-bearing pressure systems.

Kenyans have experienced dry weather conditions for the majority of February and March, despite these months typically being dominated by heavy rainfall.

Further, Kenya Met noted that the conditions would continue until the last week of this month.

"The current dry weather conditions are attributed to Tropical Cyclone "#FILIPO" in the Mozambican Channel, delaying the northward move of the rain-bearing Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). As a result, moisture influx into Kenya has significantly reduced, leading to continued sunny and dry weather conditions over much of the country.

"This dry spell, initially forecasted, may persist into the beginning of the fourth week of March and may extend to the western half of the country," read the statement in part.

However, Kenya Met added that other parts of the country, especially the northern half would begin to experience heavy rains at the beginning of April.

Development of Tropical Cyclones (TCs) in the South Western Indian Ocean is still likely within the season and this may affect the performance of the seasonal rainfall.

"Since TCs are not predictable at longer timescales, KMD will continue monitoring the situation & issue updates when necessary," read the statement in part.

Weather Conditions For the Week

Despite the current dry conditions, some parts of the country are expected to experience some moderate rainfall during the week. This includes the highlands in the central region.

On the other hand, temperatures in other parts of the country are expected to reach a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius with residents advised to stay hydrated.

The counties forecasted to experience the hot temperatures include Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Kajiado, Makueni, Kitui, Laikipia, Baringo, West Pokot, Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, and Narok.

"Conversely, average nighttime temperatures are expected to be low, dropping below 10°C, in certain parts of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Murang’a, and Kirinyaga counties," read the statement in part.
