Family and friends of a university student from Thika, Kiambu County were thrown into mourning after learning about her untimely death on the night of Sunday, March 17.

The lady who was pursuing a nursing career is said to have fallen from the balcony of a neighbouring apartment.

At the time, she was trying to reach her apartment through the back door after looking herself outside. Reports indicate that the deceased wanted to get the keys and gain access to the apartment.

However, she slipped, fell and lost her life on the spot. Some of the eyewitnesses claimed that she was under the influence of alcohol which may have impaired her judgement.

Her friends from the renowned university have mourned her. They have also posed questions about the last-minute decisions that led to her death.

The apartment's management also sent their condolences to deceased's family as investigations into the matter commence.

Police later moved her body to the General Kago Funeral Home in Thika as the family awaits the autopsy results.

Following the student's untimely demise, Kenyans have called upon the government and other relevant authorities to introduce tougher regulations to guarantee the safety of tenants in various apartments.

Meanwhile, cases of university students losing their lives under unclear and mysterious circumstances have been on the rise with some committing suicide inside their various apartments and hostels.

In February, a fifth-year student from Machakos University was accused of stabbing his girlfriend, a first-year student after a heated argument leading to the suspect's arrest.

Another incident was reported at Strathmore University in September 2023, when a 22-year-old died after jumping from the fifth floor of the Gateway Mall.

As the cases rise, the government has put in place more measures to reduce the death of young Kenyans in rental apartments and short-stay accommodation spaces.
