A police officer of the rank of a constable on Friday, March 29, died after shooting himself in the head inside his house in Laikipia County.
The body of the officer who was based at Magutu police station was retrieved from his house on the fateful night of his death by officers from Umande Police Station.
According to the police, the officer allegedly shot himself in the chin with the bullet coming out through his left ear.
Upon visiting the scene of the incident, the officers found his body lying in a pool of blood on his bed. The officers then proceeded to inform the deceased's elder brother about the tragedy.
The police officers while interrogating the house recovered a G3 rifle and about 19 pieces of ammunition, according to the police, there was a possibility that the officer used the rifle to commit suicide.
The body of the deceased was moved to Laikipia Referral Hospital awaiting postmortem.
While reporting the matter, the officers noted the main motive behind the officer's suicide case was yet to be known.
This is not the first time that an officer has committed suicide, in a similar incident on January 3, a police officer attached to Kangema Police Station in Murang'a County shot himself in the mouth.
According to a police report, the officer allegedly shot himself while on duty, however, he was quickly rescued by his colleagues who rushed him to the hospital.
A doctor's report noted the officer needed quick surgery since the bullet penetrated through his head. Despite efforts to save him, the officer passed away due to heavy bleeding.
His body was moved to the Murang'a Level Five hospital mortuary where later his family was informed of the incident.
