In a grand state banquet held on Wednesday evening, Ghana awarded President William Ruto with its highest honour, the Companion of the Order of the Star of the Volta.

The prestigious accolade was conferred upon President Ruto by Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, who hailed Ruto as an exemplar of a new breed of African leaders committed to upholding principles of accountability and due process for all citizens, irrespective of their societal status.

President Akufo-Addo lauded Ruto’s unwavering dedication to ensuring the application of these principles, even in the face of intricate political challenges.

"Under your leadership," President Akufo-Addo proclaimed, "Kenya has become a shining beacon of a nation governed by the rule of law."

He further commended President Ruto for steering Kenya back to a position of prominence on the international stage, citing achievements such as the decline in inflation, the burgeoning start-up ecosystem, and initiatives aimed at expanding access to housing and healthcare for Kenyan citizens.

This recognition of President Ruto’s leadership comes amidst his diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties with other African nations.

The Order of the Star of the Volta is distinguished by its intricately designed insignia, which includes a medal shaped like a seven-pointed star, measuring 45 mm in diameter, suspended on a ring and worn with a ribbon collar.

Additionally, recipients of the honour are adorned with a sash, a pendant, and a rosette, with a miniature version also provided for ceremonial purposes.

Depending on the class, the insignia is worn over either the right or left shoulder. The highest class, Companion, is crafted from 18-carat gold.

Its obverse side showcases a symbolic representation of the Volta Hydro Scheme, featuring a combination of yellow and white gold, symbolising the damming and control of the river and the power derived from it.

On the reverse side, a composite device depicting symbols of freedom and justice is displayed, accompanied by the inscription 'Companion of the Order of the Volta' in raised relief.

During his visit to Ghana, President Ruto secured support for the Azimio la Umoja Coalition and veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga’s bid for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).

President Akufo-Addo pledged Ghana's backing, marking a significant step in Ruto's quest for regional support.

It was a historic moment, as this marked President Ruto's first official pitch for support in West Africa following his reconciliation with Raila Odinga, his former political adversary.

Since publicly endorsing Odinga's candidacy for the AU top seat, Ruto had previously sought support from neighbouring countries, with only Rwanda publicly pledging its endorsement.
