Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, April 5, apprehended three people linked to the sale of adulterated fuel.

In a statement, the Directorate noted that the arrests were made following their recent crackdown by a team of Operations Support Unit detectives, who had been deployed to curb the surge in sales and siphoning off the substandard fuel.

“This is a proactive measure of preventing unfortunate incidents of infernos and sale of substandard products to unsuspecting Kenyans,” the statement read in part.

The team, during the raid, seized over 425 litres of diesel and 50 litres of industrial oil at a concealed spot within the Cheptiret area in Uasin Gishu County.

Following a lead, they ambushed another den within the Salgaa shopping centre in Nakuru County where another 110 litres of adulterated fuel was confiscated.

The arrested suspects were placed in custody to help the officers with investigations, on other operations relating to the sale of the altered fuel.

DCI further issued a warning to those engaging in the dangerous and prohibited trade to seize their operations.

The operation comes after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) closed fifteen stations spread across the country, selling adulterated fuel to unsuspecting vehicle owners.

In a notice published in the local dailies, the authority revealed that it carried out 6,284 tests between January and March this year.

"From the tests, 1,380 (98.92%) of the sites were found to be compliant. However, tests from fifteen, 15 (1.08%) sites turned out to be non-compliant,” the notice noted.

The affected stations are located in several counties including; Machakos, Trans Nzoia, Kisumu, Kajiado, Bungoma, Murang'a, Murang'a, Embu, Nyandarua and Kitui among others.

They include; Sheen Filling Station, Archers Post, in Samburu, Starways Filling Station in Trans Nzoia, Fourems Filling Station at Migosi in Kisumu, Emmary Filling Station in Elerai, Kajiado, By-Faith Filling Station in Mateka, Bungoma, and Jumbo Immah Filling Station in Gatunyu, Murang'a.
