Gretta Fenner, the Managing Director of the Basel Institute of Management in Switzerland, has been reported dead after an accident in Kenya.
Fenner a well-known anticorruption campaigner lost her life in one of the grisly accidents in the country on Sunday.
While confirming the tragic accident, the Institute described the deceased as an extraordinary force for change in the fight against corruption.
She was also lauded for leading the building and leading the institute for over a decade.
"We and our partners and counterparts around the world, will miss her greatly. Her family and friends are in our thoughts as we come to terms with this news," read part of a statement from the institution.
However, the institute did not get into details about the accident in honour of the family's request who wanted privacy during these trying times.
Her death came as a shock to her colleagues and others who were part of the anti-corruption campaign. They have condoled with the family with many asking for a way to celebrate her life.
In a statement, the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) coalition mourned the tragic death of Fenner and sent condolence messages to the family and friends.
"Gretta was an extraordinary leader, a powerful force driving impact and change, and a pillar of the anti-corruption community," read a statement from the coalition.
While responding to inquiries about honouring Fenner's death, the Basel Institute on Governance has requested tribute messages, which will be shared with the family of the deceased and partners in the form of a private printed book.
Additionally, a section of the tributes will also be displayed on a public tribute web page which is under development.
Fenner is among the thousands of individuals who have lost their lives in road accidents since the beginning of the year. These accidents have taken lives and left others with severe injuries.
According to statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 1,214 fatalities have been reported from January to April. This was an increase of 5 per cent compared to the same period in 2023.
Following the accidents, the Ministry of Transport has announced new measures, fines and penalties for anyone who goes against traffic rules and endangers the lives of other motorists, road users and passengers.
The ministry has also directed the return of NTSA officers on the roads to work in liaison with traffic officers and restore sanity on the roads.
