American Diplomat Questioned After Gun Drama in Nairobi's University Way

A US diplomatic official serving in the Nairobi Embassy was on Sunday questioned by police officers after he drew a gun and threatened to shoot a Kenyan civilian in public.

The incident occurred along University Way and is said to have resulted from a minor accident between the American diplomat’s vehicle and another car belonging to a Kenyan civilian.

A video released by a witness on social media shows a number of police officers surrounding a white 4×4 Landcruiser bearing diplomatic number plates.

Central Police Station OCPD Robinson Thuku has already confirmed the incident, adding that the American official drew his gun but did not fire.

“I received reports of the incident and a man was questioned and there were no shots fired during the confrontation only that he drew his gun and threatened a civilian after a minor accident,” Thuku confirmed.

Under International law, the local police can only question such officials given that they enjoy diplomatic immunity.

The police can, however, report the matter to the respective embassy for further investigation.

Thuku stated that the matter was being investigated further and would be followed up accordingly.
