Kenyan Bishop Caught in Sh5.6 Million Theft

A Bishop and a Prophetess were Thursday arraigned at Milimani law courts after being arrested for allegedly stealing Sh5.6 Million from two worshipers after promising to drive away demons.

Samuel Muchai also known as Pastor Brown and Esther Gitau of United Hope World Reach Church in Nyahururu, Nyandarua County appeared before Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo and denied charges of obtaining money by false pretence.

The victims, Caroline Wambugu and Gladys Nyamu, reported the matter at Makadara Police Station claiming that between January and March, they had given the two clergy members Sh4 Million via M-Pesa and the rest on cash after the promise of exorcising demons.

Muchai and Gitau were each released on Sh2 Million bond or Sh500,000 cash bail awaiting the hearing of their case on July 7.

Evangelists performing dubious miracles while conning and extorting money from desperate Kenyans have previously been exposed, with self-proclaimed prophet, Victor Kanyari, being the best remembered.

Kanyari is famous for asking congregants to 'plant a seed' of Sh310 to receive miracles.

Religious and political leaders have criticized unscrupulous people who masquerade as Pastors, Preachers, Bishops, Apostles and Prophets by hawking and peddling the Word of God, maintaining maintained that the doctrine of 'planting a seed' in order to receive a miracle is all false and evil.
