Bishop Says He Killed a Man

Bishop Thomas Wahome of Helicopter Ministries on Thursday admitted before an Othaya court that he knocked and killed a man.

The court heard that the victim, Godfrey Mwaniki, was drunk at the time when the accident happened. A witness in the case said that he had been drinking with the deceased before the June 22 incident took place at Kihuri in Othaya, Nyeri County.

Bishop Wahome said that he saw Mwaniki crossing the road but shortly after the deceased staggered back right on the road.

The preacher told Presiding Magistrate Raymond Kibet that he halted his car to help Mwaniki only to find him dead.

The controversial televangelist, however, surprised the court when he said that he could not remember the registration number of the car he was driving.

Wahome said that he could only recall driving a range rover but hardly recollected other details.

The case is set to continue on November 16, even as another similar suit involving another televangelist, accused of causing death reportedly behind the wheels of a range rover continues.

Pastor James Ng'ang'a denied the charges, refuting witnesses' claims that he was at the scene of the accident which claimed the life of Mercy Njeri while injuring her husband.
