Blow for Garissa Residents as Major Supermarket Sells Outlet

Naivas supermarket has sold off one of its retail supermarkets in Garissa following insecurity fears in the North Eastern region.

The family owned supermarket finally decided to cut its losses announcing on Wednesday, the sale of the outlet to investors from the area.

The sale comes barely a year since it was opened.

Naivas was the first major retail chain to set up shop in the region and was hoping to take advantage of the readily available market.

Business Daily reports that Naivas did not disclose the identity of the investors or the financial details of the sale.

The outlet had been closed for three months after security concerns arose following an attack in a university college in the area that left 148 people dead.

The region has seen businesses close or move as a result of security fears.

The education sector in the area has also suffered as teachers refuse to go back unless their security is guaranteed.

Recently the non-teaching staff from Garissa University where the attack happened issued a statement defying orders to go back to the school.
