CBK Reveals Chase Bank Could Re-open Soon

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has given an indication that troubled Chase Bank could be back in operation sooner than it had been anticipated.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge revealed that the regulator had received five offers from companies which were willing to purchase the bank.

"We have received upwards of five institutions, both local and foreign, wanting to buy the bank. We are evaluating this interests," said Njoroge.

However, Njoroge failed to give specific names of the said institutions which were willing to rescue the fallen giant in Kenya's banking industry.

The CBK boss gave hopes to the bank's customers after indicating that reviving Chase Bank was an easier task, which he was working to achieve as compared to Imperial Bank which collapsed last year.

Another pointer that the bank could soon resume operations is willingness by its management and stakeholders to acquire and register collateral documents for unsecured loans, amounting close to Sh16 Billion.

During the conference, the governor assured that CBK was working tirelessly to ensure that the bank is re-opened for stranded customers to access their accounts.

Chase Bank was put under receivership of Kenya Depositor Insurance Corporation which meant that its clients could neither deposit nor withdraw money from their accounts.
