Children Die as Doctors' Strike Continues

Children are some of the worst-hit casualties by the ongoing medical health workers' strike which is spreading across various towns in Kenya.

Three children from Kilifi and Nakuru counties have died at different hospitals.

Two of the children died at the Rift Valley General Hospital in Nakuru County.

Medics from the county downed their tools on Monday, protesting delayed salaries.

Activities in most hospitals in the county including Molo, Gilgil, Olenguruione and Naivasha Hospitals have bee brought to an almost complete standstill, leaving many sick people with no choice but to go home.

Others have been forced to salvage all they have to pay for costly medical services in private hospitals.

Meanwhile, an 11-year-old boy died, following a nurses strike in Kilifi County Hospital.

The nurses have gone on strike demanding a salary increment and better working conditions.

Speaking to The Nation, the child's mother said she had taken her sick son to the hospital but the nurses would not attend to him, saying they had gone on strike from Monday midnight.

The child died at 5 am.

The incident brings the total number of children dead to three, following the medical sector crisis to three.

Health workers from the two counties have sited that they resorted to the move because the relevant government authorities had failed to address their grievances.
