Court Staff Smokes Bhang

A staff at a Nyeri court is a bhang smoker and an alcoholic, the Magistrate was told.

According to a probation report presented in court, Josphat Gitonga went deep into abusing the drugs immediately his wife and son left him two years ago.

The court heard that Gitonga who is accused of asking for a Sh1500 bribe to facilitate processing of case papers, became destructive when drunk which made it difficult for the family to put up with him.

Probation Officer Irene Thuranira told Chief Magistrate John Onyiego, that the accused had been booked for a psychiatric examination, and was also in an alcohol management programme to help him recover.

His Lawyer pleaded with the court to release him on reasonable bond or cash bail so he could attend psychiatric clinics.

The magistrate ordered a mental check up for Mr Gitonga and set the date on January 8 when the case will be mentioned.

Gitonga will take plea on the same day.
