Deadly Gang Targeting Police Emerges

Security agents in Mombasa County are on high alert after concerns emerged of a daring and fast rising gang, spreading tentacles in the region.

The group, which is impersonating police officers, is reportedly terrorising residents and killing security agents then making away with fire arms.

County Commissioner Nelson Marwa, said that the new mob is trying to gain access to weapons in police storage in order to carry out terror activities in Mombasa.

On Monday, Marwa added that the group had targeted security officers, attacking, killing and taking their firearms in the Old Town, Majengo and Bondeni areas.

“They are walking around with fake IDs that have National Police Service colours, pretending to be security officers, but we are now on the lookout,” he said.

Marwa noted that Mombasa political leaders and Non-Governmental Organizations were not being impartial in the war on terror and crime in the region.

“We cannot win this fight alone if leaders only come out to defend criminals. I have not seen any political leader or a human rights organization coming out to condemn these recent attacks on security personnel. Are police officers not human beings?” he said.

Officials from the National Police Service, Kenya Defense Forces and the National Intelligence Service, yesterday, met to discuss strategies to curb the new crime wave.

Members of the gang, believed to be Al Shabaab returnees, are being hunted for the murder of 3 police officers and stealing their rifles. The most recent murder occurred on Friday at the Gulf African Bank in Bondeni, where an officer guarding the bank was killed and his G3 rifle stolen.

“We are not going to stop the operations until that rifle is found,” said the County Commissioner.

One person linked to the gang has been arrested and is helping the police with investigations.
