Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko on Tuesday appointed Vivo Energy Kenya Managing Director Polycarp Igathe as his running mate in a move that surprised many.
It was widely expected that Sonko would go for one of his close allies in the political circle; the likes of Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru, businesswoman Millicent Omanga or maybe billionaire Jimnah Mbaru.
Mr Igathe has been described by many as a genius due to his calculated steps in the corporate world, not forgetting the fact that he has worked for some of the top companies in the region.
He started his career in Australia where he worked as a finance officer before being absorbed by Coca-Cola and later joining Kenya Breweries Limited as sales operations manager and then as marketing manager.
It was during that period that KBL recorded outstanding profits and HACO Tiger Brands came calling.
He was appointed the Managing Director at HACO before VIVO Energy sought his services.
Igathe has often ranked among the best CEO's in the region and his success is based on his firm stand on issues.
Two weeks ago, Sonko stated that he was seeking a shrewd businessman that is well-connected within the corporate world and he seems to have found the perfect fit in Igathe.
The Senator stated that he would be the governor on the ground while his deputy would handle the daily operations of the county.
Before settling on Igathe, Sonko had put out a list of nine notable individuals, asking his supporters to help him choose his running mate.
