Education CS Fred Matiang'i Gives Commission for University Education 1 Month to Clear Rot

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has given the Commission for University Education (CUE), which is mandated with ensuring quality education is offered in Kenyan Universities until January 31 to clear the rot at the institutions.

In a letter dated December 22, 2016, addressed to CUE Chairman Chacha Nyaigoti, Matiang'i stated that he had received numerous reports that universities were not adhering to the legal framework for university education.

“Concerns, complaints, petitions and representations reaching my office suggest all is not well within the public and private universities in Kenya.

“Specific concerns have been raised in respect to some of the irregularities of the universities admitting ineligible students into their degree programmes, irregularities in the examination systems,” the letter by Matiang'i reads in part.

Matiang'i also questioned why some students were being awarded degrees yet they had not qualified, urging the commission to look deeply into the matter.

In turn, the no-nonsense CS has ordered the commission to provide the following data on students by the end of January:

1. Qualifications

2. Management of students’ records

3. The size of classes and guidelines for administration of the various academic programmes

The Education CS has vowed to bring back sanity in public and private universities after reports emerged that most institutions were issuing degrees to students who were not qualified.
