El Nino to Begin This Week As US Department Joins Call

The Kenyan Coast will start experiencing extreme weather this week that will last till December.

The findings made by US-based National Centers for Environmental Prediction, labelled the coming rains as fatal hence warned Kenyans against ignoring the signs.

The Kenya Meteorological Department further reiterated the remarks saying its predictions were right as Western Kenya had began experiencing the rains.

In preparation for the torrential rains, the Kenyan Government set up a multi-agency communication team on Sunday tasked with responding to emergency situations across the country during the period.

“We are asking Kenyans to be careful now. All measures should be put in place to ensure safety of all. The rains are here,” said the Meterological Department Deputy Director, Ayub Shaka.

Nairobi region is yet to experience any rains but the department insisted that they should not be doubted because the rains would begin by the second week of October.

“We received a strong signal of the El Niño rains. We do not want to compare its expected intensity with what happened before but we got a strong signal,” he said.

The National Government has since set aside Sh5 Billion from its contingency fund and asked counties to do the same so as to avert the effects of the rains.

Last month Deputy President William Ruto stated that 70,000 National Youth Service personnel would also be dispatched to help in the recovery and evacuation processes.

Residents have been warned to expect landslides and mudslides especially in the lower Tana, Nandi Hills and Central Kenya, specifically Murang’a County.
