Eldoret Residents Rush To Open Bank Accounts at the Promise of ‘Obama Money’

National Bankof Kenya, Eldoret branch in Uasin Gishu was filled to capacity today, as residents flocked the bank to open accounts after they were told they would be getting cash promised by president Barrack Obama.

Young and old, men and women, all made their way to the branch parting with Sh 600 to open an account.

It is unclear where the rumor of the promised money emerged from as residents all gave varying ac-counts of what they had been told about the money.

Residents interviewed by K24 said that they had been told that Obama had promised to give one billion shillings for the empowerment of youth and women in the country during his visit last week.

They insisted that they were promised that cash would be deposited in their accounts in two weeks’ time.

The bank, however, said it had made it clear to the residents that there was no money from Obama.

Some residents saw the promise as a ploy by the bank to attract new customers.

During the Global Entrepreneurship Summit last week President Barrack Obama announced that the U.S. had secured more than $1 billion in investment for new businesses around the world, following up on a promise made at last year's summit in Morocco.

He then encouraged young people to venture into businesses and entrepreneurship.
