Property of unknown value and sensitive information was destroyed Sunday morning after unknown people burnt down a section of Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital.
The incident comes barely a day after nurses in Laikipia County ended their strike demanding better pay.
The fire that started in the wee hours of the morning gutted down the hospital's administration block which hosted the medical superintendents office and hospital registry.
Laikipia County Health Chief Officer Timothy Panga said that the fire had destroyed employee files that were stored in the hospital registry.
“We highly suspect that this is a case of arson. The fire started in a room that has no electrical connection, therefore the only logical explanation is that people deliberately burnt the building”, he said.
Panga also told journalists that the suspects accessed the institution by cutting the electric fence and making their way to the administration block.
“Guards on duty noticed smoke coming from one of the buildings and raised the alarm”, Panga said.
Fire fighters from Nanyuki were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the hospital.
Laikipia East OCPD Kipkoech Kirui said that police had launched investigations into the incident to determine the cause of the fire.
“We have not yet established whether it is an electric fault or a case of arson”, he said.
However, no casualties were reported.
