Heated Exchange between Sossion and Kaimenyi at Parliamentary Committee Meeting

Education CS Prof Jacob Kaimenyi and KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion renewed their rivalries against each other during a parliamentary committee meeting in Nairobi.

Tension filled the meeting convened by the National Assembly Committee on Delegated Legislation when the two almost came to blows over the contentious Basic Education Regulations.

According to The Star, the two had a heated exchange on who should have been invited to the meeting.

The Nation reports that the two appeared uneasy seated next to each other as they answered questions on the Basic Education Regulations Act.

At some point during the confrontation, Kaimenyi had to appeal to the committee’s chair for protection from Sossion, The Standard reports

During Thursday’s meeting, Sossion claimed that Kaimenyi does not invite important stakeholders key meetings, an issue he had raised in the past.

The matter was however put to rest by the committee’s chair who said the National Assembly had made the invitations for the committee meeting not Kaimenyi.

The two have in the past differed over their respective mandates with each blaming the other of breaching their mandate on matters education.

Sossion supports the sections of the Basic Education Regulations Act that needed to be changed to reduce the wide ranging powers given to the Education minister in the final document.

He took issue with the powers given to the minister that enables him to sack head teachers saying it was unconstitutional.

Kaimenyi however says the powers are justified.

In the past their differences got personal with Kaimenyi suing Sossion over alleged insults from the outspoken KNUT Secretary General.
