How Form 4 Leaver Taught in University and Supervised Lecturers

A former butcher surprised a Nakuru court when he revealed that he taught students and supervised lecturers at a public university with just a form four certificate to his name.

Appearing before Judge Stephen Radido of the Employment and Labour Relations Court, David Bungei revealed how he joined Maasai Mara University on a temporary employment before being promoted to lecturing due to his excellent performance.

The court heard that Bungei sat for his KCSE exams in 1996 and scored a mean grade of C (plain) after which he operated a butchery in Narok, a job he left after his appointment at the university.

Two years later, he was deployed to the university's campus in Kilgoris to register students through a letter signed by Acting Registrar Samson Kisirkoi.

“This is to inform you that it has been decided that you be deployed to Kilgoris to assist in recruitment of students in the new centre. You will also be expected to be sending reports to the Registrar of Academic Affairs for necessary action,” read the internal memo in part that was also copied to deputy principals.

However, Mr Kisirkoi argued that there was nothing wrong with one ascending the employment ladder.

“It is not impossible for a hardworking driver to become a company’s CEO and the case at hand is not unique,” responded Kisirkoi when asked.

It emerged in court that the 39-year-old lectured students taking; Masters in Education, undergraduate programmes in Education, Business Management and Diploma in Community Development, which he charged Sh10,000 for certificates.

The father of one also supervised lecturers for two semesters before his services were terminated over his questionable curriculum vitae.

Bungei is facing charges of mproper guidance to students, unlawful and fraudulent teaching and awarding of certificates as well as misuse of petty cash.

A ruling on the case will be made in July as the court awaits a decision by the university to recall the certificates issued to students by Bungei.
