IEBC Confirms Massive Cases of Double Registration

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has admitted that there are numerous cases of erroneous double registration ahead of the upcoming General Election.

The Commission on Tuesday revealed that 128,926 registered voters shared ID and passport numbers in the electoral body's register.

Addressing his first press conference, IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati said the mistake had emanated from errors in its data entry.

The new boss assured that the Commission was investigating the cases to ascertain how double registration occurred and also correct the mistakes.

"The commission will also make available the register for verification once the registration is complete. Those who are registering twice should get the message that we shall take the necessary action," declared Chebukati.

This means that if the elections were held today, thousands of Kenyans would be blocked from voting since the body does not allow double voting.

Chebukati was giving a breakdown of the ongoing voter registration that entered its second week yesterday. He explained that IEBC had only enlisted 825,145 new voters in the first week of the exercise.

At the same time, the polls body discouraged the several cases of voter inducement, maintaining that it doesn't support some of the measures being implemented to influence Kenyans to turn up and register.

The revelations came after Opposition leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka disclosed that their IDs had been used to register other voters.

Odinga's details had been enlisted under Maria Anyango, whereas a Salome Wanjiru from Gatundu North had been registered using Musyoka's number.

The Commission has since traced the two ladies and corrected the error in its system.
