IEBC Explains Kalonzo's ID Mix-up

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the suspension of a mobile messaging service that was being used to verify voter registration details.

The Commission announced that the SMS query code 22464 which was being used to help identify errors would not be available.

An official from the electoral body told Kenyans.co.ke that the suspension would take place immediately.

IEBC, on its Twitter timeline further stated that some voters were attempting to verify their details shortly after being registered and panicking after missing their records.

The Commission explained that uploading of such details takes time, therefore, the information can't be available immediately one is enlisted in the register.

“Some voters are attempting to confirm their records shortly after registering or applying to transfer polling stations. Effecting changes and uploading records on the database takes a while, please don't panic that you are not registered. You are!” stated the body.

The electoral body at the same time clarified an incident where Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka's ID was used to register a voter from Kiambu County.

IEBC confirmed that there were several cases of shared IDs in its records but affirmed the errors would be corrected during the inspection of the register.

“As we establish how this mix-up occurred, please note there are several cases of shared IDs in the register of voters’ database. This case could be because of data entry errors at the point of registration or genuine sharing of ID numbers,” added the Commission.

The polls body maintained that nobody who was legitimately registered would be disenfranchised on the voting day since all voters are identified using biometric features.
