IEBC Extends Deadline for Parties to Submit Names of Candidates

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit names of candidates from yesterday midnight to 14th May 2017.

In a presser, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that the decision to extend the deadline was arrived at after it emerged that there were 210 pending cases at the political parties disputes tribunal.

“The Commission notes that there are 210 pending disputes at the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal. To allow the Tribunal to complete and determine cases before it, the political parties affected are due to submit their list of candidates on or before 14 May 2017.

"This will give room to the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal to complete and determine pending cases before it,” the statement read in part.

According to Mr Chebukati, the submission of the list of nominated candidates by the parties must be done electronically.

He further stated that the decision by the Malindi High Court to extend the party primaries from 26 April to 30 April 2017 also interfered with the electoral timelines that they had initially allocated.
