John Githongo Claims Kibaki Knew Individuals Behind Anglo-Leasing Scandal

A former advisor to retired President Mwai Kibaki has revealed interesting details involving the infamous multi-billion Anglo-leasing scandal.

John Githongo, who worked closely with Mr Kibaki, now indicates that Kenya's third President was well aware of the scam allegedly orchestrated by top officials in his administration.

He added that Mr Kibaki decided to sweep the matter under the carpet after it appeared his Government would be affected negatively once exposed.

"They knew who were responsible and money was returned to the Treasury. I was told to drop the matter since it was not desirable to expose them," he said.

Githogo, who was appearing before the court for linking Former Internal Security minister Chris Murungaru to the graft, highlighted that Cabinet Ministers in Kibaki's administration tried to silence him promising to return the money to the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

"CBK provided evidence that the money had been returned, not only in Anglo-Leasing. Over Sh1 billion had been returned - the money being from contracts that were under investigation by the EACC (Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission) and the Auditor General's office,” Githongo told the court.

The anti-corruption czar mentioned that Mr Murungaru was listed among those who wanted to defraud the government.

However, then Justice Minister Kiraitu Murungi urged him to drop the matter since it was known who had taken the money and had been asked to return.

In court, Murungaru is suing Githongo for defamation over his dossier which placed him at the centre of the Sh7 Billion saga.

He pleads that Githongo had no mandate to investigate the matter adding that it had negatively affected his political ambitions.
