Kakamega Principals Swear to Defy Matiang'i Directive on School Fees

A section of secondary school principals have rudely responded to Education CS Fred Matiang’i's directive that caps the maximum amount of fees that public schools can charge.

Matiang’i made the directive as a solution to numerous cases of principals hiking fees with the intention of corruptly benefiting from the extra monies.

However, some of the principals argue that the limit in Matiang’i's directive was not enough to effectively run schools, adding that some institutions would be closed down due to losses.

“We are prepared to defy the order, especially because it is school management boards, not the government, that pays teachers hired by the school management boards,” Kakamega county principals’ representative Godfrey Owori stated.

The Education CS has in the past stated that any school head who charges more than the stipulated school fees will face serious consequences.

The school heads have stated that the government should ensure schools are well-funded rather than issue empty threats.

“The government must address the inefficiencies in tuition charged to ensure quality is not compromised,” Owori stated.
