Kalonzo, Wetangula Make Last-Minute Cancellations to Meetings Meant to Discuss NASA Challenges

National Super Alliance (NASA) co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula were Tuesday forced to make last minute cancellations to two meetings that had been prepared separately to discuss the challenges facing the coalition as it seeks to have a proper nominations formula.

Kalonzo had called the Wiper Party’s National Executive Committee members to discuss the nomination rules submitted to the Registrar of Political Parties last week but cancelled it at the last minute, citing quorum hitch.

The Wiper Party leader, however, assured the party aspirants that there would not be joint nominations in NASA.

A similar last-minute cancellation was made by FORD-Kenya leader Wetangula who had called a press conference to discuss the way forward on the impasse that has hit the NASA team over a proposal to hold joint nominations. No explanation was given.

The Standard on Wednesday reported that the last-minute cancellations were made after the NASA co-principals, including ODM’s Raila Odinga and ANC’s Musalia Mudavadi met with a team of evangelists where they were also advised to avoid expressing their differences in public.

NASA’s constituent parties have in the past week issued contradicting statements that have revealed simmering conflict on the issue of joint nominations.

On February 28th, ANC became the first party to announce that it would not agree to joint nominations.

Through Secretary-General George Otsotsi, the Mudavadi-led party stated that it had not agreed to conduct joint primaries especially in areas where NASA parties enjoy equal support.

The issue had slowly escalated to the point where Wiper Secretary-General Omar Hassan threatened Musyoka’s party would walk out if they were forced to hold joint nominations with NASA.
