KEMU Students Injured As Security Drill Goes Wrong

A terror attack security drill at the Kenya Methodist University in Meru on Wednesday, resulted in panic, leading to the injury of several students.

As part of the drill, a member of the security personnel, armed with a gun and dressed like an al Shabaab militant entered the university where he fired shots, shouting that he was member of the terror group.

When gunshots rented the air, the students all ran for safety, not aware that it was a security drill.

Residents of neighboring estates also panicked after police shot in the air during the drill at 3.30pm, The Nation reports.

According to The Star, six students sustained serious injuries and were admitted at the Meru Level Five Hospital.

K24 reports that the drill comes ahead of a graduation ceremony slated for Saturday.

Security agencies were allegedly conducting a mock drill to check the alertness of students and employees at the university.

Speaking to the press, Imenti North Administration Police Commander Peter Karanja said most students and staff were not aware of the mock exercise.

Kenya Red Cross coordinator Gitonga Mugambi who was at the scene faulted the school's administration for conducting the drill unprofessionally.
