Kenya's Trending Topics on Tuesday 7th February 2017

Kenyans on social media on Tuesday started the day with heated conversations revolving around socio-economic and political topics.

Among the main topics was a conversation under the hashtag  #NoRailaNoNasa, which emerged after claims that ODM leader Raila Odinga could be pushed out of the National Super Alliance (NASA).

Here are the day’s trending topics

1. #SalomeDivorcesPhaRAO

The trend gained traction after Wiper leaders including Senators Johnson Muthama (Machakos), David Musila (Machakos), and Mutula Kilonzo Junior (Makueni) threatened to ditch their party leader Kalonzo Musyoka if he abandoned the CORD coalition.

The reports saw mischevious Opposition critics make up this hashtag which was inspired by a past incident when Musyoka's Identification details were found to be registered to a lady identified as SALOME WANJIRU NJOROGE.

The Wiper leader has since denied reports that he has any plans to bolt out of the CORD coalition.

2. #NoRailaNoNasa

This trend started after renowned political analyst Prof. Mutahi Ngunyi hypothesised that the National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders would sideline the former Prime Minister to force his exit from their coalition and ultimately ensure ODM went on its own in the August 8 General Election.

Ngunyi's theory sparked anxiety from both proponents of the theory and others who felt that it was a propaganda meant to undermine Opposition unity efforts.

3. #BYOBTVShow

The tag appeared on the leading trend topics in Kenya ahead of a new television show bearing the same name.

The show (Be Your Own Boss) is an initiative of Safaricom’s Blaze network that works towards empowering the Kenyan youth through tailored products and services.

The new TV show will involve a competition of business ideas among 12 contestants and will be judged by a panel comprising of media personality Caroline Mutoko, musician King Kaka and entrepreneur Trushar Khetia.

After the show that starts today, the winning contestant will scoop an award of Sh32 Million to invest in their business idea.

3. KMPDUSenate

This converstaion started as the Kenya Medical Practioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) met the Senate over their prolonged strike that is now headed into its third month.

4. #TurkanaInsecurity

The trend started as a discussion on the state of insecurity that has hit Turkana county.

The government has responded by distributing guns to some of the vulnerable communities, a move that did not go well with a section of Kenyans on social media.

5. Interior CS

This conversation went on as the Interior and Coordination CS Joseph Nkaissery held a meeting with stakeholders seeking to mitigate the current drought that is some parts of the country.

6. #StopTheCut

This conversation continued from Monday when Kenyans marked the International Day of Zero Tolerance on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

7. #WarOnDrugs

This is another hashtag that continued from Monday conversations with commentators discussing the ongoing crackdown on drug lords at the Coast.

The Kenyan government has been on the overdrive in its manhunt for drug barons ever since the successful arrest and extradition of the Akasha brothers.

8. ex-speaker Kenneth Marende

This trend was driven by reports of a private meeting between former Speaker Kenneth Marende and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
