Kidero Gives Huruma Survivors Sh2 Million

Survivors of the collapsed Huruma Building will benefit from a Sh2 Million kitty set up by City Hall.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero on Sunday said that the County Government had set aside the money to help victims of the tragedy that occured when a building in Huruma Estate collapsed due to the ongoing heavy rainfall in Nairobi.

While rescue efforts continue in the building that collapsed on Friday night, the death toll has so far reached 16, while another 65 are still unaccounted.

Mr Pius Maasai of the Natural Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) expressed that rescue operations have been hampered by congestion, heavy rain and the delicate nature of the operation since they believe there could be people still under the rubble.

Kidero now says that  county officials charged with building approvals will face the axe on Tuesday.

Nairobi County has been on the spotlight several times after unsafe buildings have been approved, later collapsing and causing high number of deaths.

The Nairobi Governor blames politics, corruption and intervention from ‘powerful people’ for the constant collapse of buildings in Nairobi.
