KNEC Exposes Police Stations that Leaked KCSE Exams

A report by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has revealed police stations believed to have been involved in tampering last year's national examination papers.

Other than the Wargadud Police Station in Mandera that hit headlines, examination packages were reportedly interfered with in Migori, Mombasa and Siaya County Police Stations.

In the shocking revelations that continue to emerge, it was disclosed that the vice was also abetted in Murang’a, Kisumu and Kitui police stations

An ongoing probe by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) indicated that police officers in charge of facilities where exams were stored, acted in complicity to allow teachers and students access the examination papers.

At Wargadud, an NTV report highlighted that police officers acting in cahoot with a school's deputy principal, Patrick Irungu, tore exam packages, photographed the question papers then resealed the carrier bags.

The images were then circulated through WhatsApp to students who parted with certain amounts of money.

Mr Irungu of Wargadud Secondary is reported to have raked in Sh1.5 Million from the illegal business, part of which he used to purchase a new vehicle.

Police Spokesman Charles Owino, however, denied reports that police officers were involved in the intrinsic web that furthered the leakage of national exams.

Owino only acknowledged being aware of a single case where a Kilifi officer was charged for having received images of the examination.

Pressure continues to mount on the government to get to the root cause of the rampant examination theft, with investigation reports from KNEC and the DCI recommending that all persons linked to exam cheating be held accountable.
