Low Voter Registration Hits Nyahururu GK Prison, Official Reveals

Prison officials have expressed worry after low turnout in voter registration by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

According to records at Nyahururu GK Prison in Nyandarua County, only 24 inmates had registered by Thursday, out of the 400 targeted prisoners.

The officer-in-charge of the prison, Mathew Kimanzi, divulged that the voter apathy was caused by various reasons including the fact that they (prisoners) would only be voting for the President.

He noted that the prisoners wanted to cast votes in other seats in the General Election.

Mr Kimanzi further stated that some inmates did not have identification cards hence could not register as voters while others highlighted personal reasons.

The registration is expected to end on February 27.

The electoral body Chairman Wafula Chebukati had earlier announced that the Commission was formulating regulations to govern the participation of prisoners in the August 8 General Election.

"Prisoners will only be allowed to vote for the presidential seat. We are making proposals for regulation of their participation," Chebukati stated.
