Makau Mutua Questions Matiang'i's Credibility, Poses 7 Questions

Law Professor Makau Mutua has raised serious questions on the integrity of Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i following the radical Education reforms he has spearheaded.

In his opinion piece titled: Something’s fishy about Education CS Fred Matiang’i exam reforms, Prof. Mutua pokes holes on how Matiang'i was able to clean up a system that had been rotten for years within the short period of service.

"You don’t reform a collapsed national system in a year. It’s never been done anywhere. The 'no-nonsense' CS told the country that he had cleaned up the system. In one fell swoop, the son of Matiang’i slew the demons of cheating cartels and the web of syndicates that had completely corrupted the bone marrow of the education system.

"And Dr Matiang’i had done it without firing a single shot, or sending a single culprit to jail." Mutua states.

The lawyer questions where the cartels the Minister scrapped from the system were taken to.

"Where have the cartels gone? Are they just hiding? Who were the people behind them? Why haven’t they been caught? If Dr Matiang’i knows them, why are they not in court?" Mutua poses.

He wittily inquires whether the cartel had been replaced by new ones after the 'Matiang'i' reforms.

"How do we know the previous cartels haven’t been replaced by new ones? Importantly, how is it possible to clean one aspect of an entirely rotten system without a systemic and publicly-accountable overhaul?" Mutua interrogates.

Mutua tells the CS he ought to provide evidence highlighting that: "Something doesn’t add up. The 2016 KCSE results are simply too fishy — not believable. In a democracy, public officials can’t get away with telling citizens to take their word for it.

"I want him to show me the goods — the evidence," the law lecturer says.

After the results of the 2016 KCSE Examination were released, Mutua raised doubt stating: "Either the 2016 KCSE results are a complete SHAM, or the previous ones were COOKED. One or the other must be TOSSED out. Both can't STAND."

"I don't buy the 2016 KCSE results. Too fishy. CS @FredMatiangi is selling snake oil. Deep systemic cheating can't be solved with a wand," he added.
