Mutunga Reveals Most Shocking Moment as Chief Justice

Retired Chief Justice Dr Willy Mutunga has revealed his shocking moments while at the helm of the Kenyan Judiciary.

Speaking on Thursday, Mutunga expressed that several years had passed but he was yet to recover from an incident in which he found a female Judge with five flasks of tea all for herself.

According to Dr Mutunga, the said the lady justice was holding all that tea in her office yet other judicial staffers were not entitled to tea.

“I went to the chambers of some woman judge and I saw she had five flasks of tea and so I went back and asked ‘is the tea for everybody at the Judiciary,” said Mutunga.

Mutunga further said that he got a rude shock when junior staffers told him the five flasks of tea were indeed for the judge in question.

The event prompted the former CJ to order that all staffers at the judiciary be entitled to a cup of tea every day at 11am.

“The judges initially boycotted because they were always aloof that they could not see how they could have tea with lesser mortals. After a while, they got used to it, and that’s laughable,” Mutunga was quoted by Capital FM.

The ex-President of the Supreme court also narrated his experience during initial days as the head of the Judiciary.

“The first time I got there, people were running away from me in the corridors. I would just wonder what kind of institution is this where people don’t share the corridors. When you meet someone on the corridor and if they can’t run, they freeze,” remarked the man lauded for reforming the Kenyan court system.

Mutunga retired on June 16, a year earlier than the stipulated time to give the Judicial Service Commission sufficient period to hire a new CJ.
