NASA Unveils Mechanisms to Name Flag-bearer Ahead of April Deadline

The National Super Alliance (NASA) has resolved to change its mechanism of coming up with the coalition's flag bearer before the April 15 deadline.

On Monday, the NASA technical Committee is said to have held a meeting where they agreed on two ways of choosing their candidate – either the four co-principals agree among themselves or an electoral college be formed to name the flag bearer.

The electoral college would be constituted by a select team of members from the four-member parties that form the Alliance; ODM Party, Wiper Movement, Amani National Congress and Ford-Kenya.

Earlier on, the NASA technical committee had proposed that the candidate be picked through nominations.

A source affiliated with NASA indicated that although the coalition's National Coordination Committee (NCC) was supposed to name a flag bearer after receiving recommendations from the technical team, the four chiefs have the mandate to decide who flies the Alliance's flag in the August polls.

"The four can have a meeting even tomorrow and come out and tell Kenyans who among them is the presidential candidate and running mate. They have other leaders' and supporters' backing," the source noted.

The process is expected to be completed by the end of March.

The source also revealed that NCC is also putting together a NASA secretariat, which is to be made up of technocrats.

"We have made it clear that no politician should be in the secretariat. We want professionals who are willing to work as they will be tasked with research and advising the principals on key election matters. The secretariat will be made up of members from the four parties," the source revealed.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Raila Odinga and his co-principals Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang'ula are set to hold a meeting today to deliberate on various contentious issues that have been emerging in the alliance.
